To understand the term Personality Disorder, we first need to look at the meaning of the word “Personality” in mental health terms. It refers to the collection or traits of characteristics that we have developed during our lives, which make us individual. For example; the way that we think, feel and therefore behave define our personalities.

Personality Disorders can occur when parts of our personalities (traits) develop in ways that make it difficult for us accept and like ourselves and/or others. These traits, that may have become established in adolescence, can make certain aspects of life quite challenging, such as

Making or keeping close relationships
Controlling emotions/behaviour
Managing family dynamics
Setting goals and working towards them.

Treatment for people with Personality Disorders can also be psychological (CBT/DBT) and through the use of medication for easing of symptoms. People with Personality Disorders are also more likely to suffer from other mental health difficulties such as depression and anxiety.
